What is disability pride?

About Disability Pride Month: Every year in July, there is a celebration known as Disability Pride Month that aims to increase awareness of and respect for, people who have disabilities.

The narrative is intended to be changed from one of sympathy or restriction to one of empowerment and celebration. Many activities, get-togethers, and projects that promote advocacy, education, and awareness are held throughout the month. The Disability Pride movement hopes to dispel myths, overcome structural impediments, and advance an inclusive society through various initiatives.

Why we need change,

Disability has been stigmatised for too long as something to be pitied or ashamed of because it makes the person appear less capable than others.

Dylan Alcott, the Australian of the Year, is all too aware of this. Individuals with disabilities have always been seen as inferior to non-disabled people, he told ESPN in January. They just have an unconscious pre-justice. That has always excited me. We don’t get employment like other people do, we don’t get asked out on dates, and we don’t get opportunities like other people do, he claimed.

We refer to this as ableism. Disability pride is about opposing ableism and this pejorative perception of people with disabilities. It involves standing up and taking pride in who we are and the contribution we contribute to society. This UN Human Rights Office film explains what ableism is and why we need to rethink how we think about disability.

  • Celebrating Achievements: Disability Pride Month provides an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of people with disabilities across all spheres of life. From academia to sports, arts to politics, individuals with disabilities have made significant contributions throughout history. We will highlight remarkable stories of individuals who have shattered barriers and inspired others through their achievements. By sharing these stories, we hope to inspire and motivate readers to recognise and nurture the potential within themselves and others.
  • Fostering Inclusion and Accessibility: One of the central themes of Disability Pride Month is promoting inclusivity and accessibility for all. We will explore the importance of designing environments, technologies, and social systems that accommodate people with disabilities. By creating inclusive spaces and breaking down barriers, we can ensure equal opportunities for everyone to participate fully in society. We will discuss the significance of accessible infrastructure, inclusive education, and employment practices that embrace diversity.
  • Challenging Stigmas and Misconceptions: Society often perpetuates misconceptions and stigmas about disabilities, hindering progress toward a truly inclusive world. Disability Pride Month serves as a platform to challenge these biases head-on. We will debunk common stereotypes, address ableism, and encourage open conversations about disabilities. By fostering empathy and understanding, we can create a more compassionate society that values every individual for their unique abilities.
  • Advocacy and Empowerment: Advocacy plays a crucial role in the Disability Pride movement. We will discuss the importance of advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, including access to healthcare, employment, education, and equal opportunities. Empowering individuals with disabilities to have a voice, make choices, and actively participate in decision-making processes will be emphasised. We will showcase organisations and resources that support and amplify the voices of individuals with disabilities.
